GreenHeart Fair Trade Store in Chicago

Pedro and I visited Greenheart, in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park neighborhood and loved this store so much that we already decided to make a return visit when he returns from a trip to California.

From their website:

Greenheart is Chicago’s premier eco-fair trade non-profit shop, carrying both fair trade and eco friendly products. Greenheart carries a variety of goods including recycled accessories and handbags, home goods, gourmet treats, cookbooks, glassware, jewelry, toys, personal care, organic cotton t-shirts and more. Greenheart believes consumers have the power to affect positive World change by supporting sustainable and fair business practices in their purchasing choices.

What is Eco-Fair Trade? Greenheart follows the guiding principles of “Fair Trade”. Fair Trade supports sustainable community development by ensuring that the artisans making the products are paid fair living wages. “Eco” signifies that our products are made using the most sustainable materials and methods whenever possible. At Greenheart, we are both “Fair to producers, and good to the Earth”.

So what’s not to like? The store is filled with lovely items for your home, to wear and to use from around the world. The alpaca sweaters from Bolivia were not only of very good quality, but nicely detailed and a classic style that one can wear year after year, transcending fashion. I resisted the temptation to buy another cloth cross body bag, which when you don’t have a car, these things are incredibly handy for carting books and food around. The ornate, detail shown on the bag (in greens) below show a level of workmanship that exemplifies why Green Heart goes above and beyond the general offerings of unique, artistically beautiful pieces in a Fair Trade and Eco-Friendly setting.

Maya Essence Fair Trade Goods & Gallery

Friday I took a much needed break and stopped off at a new store on Lincoln Avenue in the Lincoln Square area, called Maya Essence. Maya Essence is part of Casa Guatemala’s Fair Trade initiative. This space offers fair trade goods, including coffee, as well as clothing and other dry goods, and DVD’s. Fair trade merchandise comes not only from Latin America, mostly Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, but also from Vietnam and Ghana. Another view from outside:

A painting greets you as you enter and as you leave:

Some of the prints on the fabric are quite intriguing, a mix of geometrics with a modern yet ethnic flair.
Fortunately I have my bowl issues under control, so this interesting piece did not go home with me. It’s intriguing, the outside being stained in red with the inside made of wood.
Because of my dad’s connections with wood, hey, it’s in the genes so I had to take this shot, too.

And soaps!!

And bags!! Y Pedro, no compro bolsas!! I am coveting one though!

Liquid soaps here. I had a lot of groceries so carrying anything that would add weight to my bags wasn’t going to happen, but maybe next time I’ll check them out.
On the walls in the back room there were two paintings that were fully visible on the walls. They are physically in two separate pieces which is part of the media being conveyed. This one makes me sad to see, as it depicts the immigration of refugees who need to flee for their lives.
This one should touch anyone who knows recent immigrants, as they leave one home for another, in this case, Chicago.

I was really laden with groceries, but I did pick up a DVD that I will try to watch over the weekend called Voice of the Mountain, suggested by Willy, whom I met there. Willy’s blog is called Documigrante Weblog, a documentary style weblog about immigrant and migrant journeys.
