Beadniks Beads Chicago

If you love vibrant, rich colors, gems, crystals, whimsical charms and you like to make your own jewelry, have I got a place for you! Pedro and I were on our way to a clothing shop on West Division when this store caught our attention. It is a generously sized space filled with just about anything you could want to make jewelry or to pick up smaller sized rough cut or or tumbled gems.

The owners, Mary and Andrea, are upbeat, helpful, welcoming and fun. They offer an interesting selection of classes, from getting to know your findings, handmade hoops, hammered bangles, how to string, know, wear and care for your pearls, remaking your old jewelry or hand me downs, as well as metal stamping workshops.

The space feels fabulous, and you can easily get lost in the many visual delights that the store has to offer. The strands of gems here offered a cheery alternative to the gloomy lack of sunshine outside, and Spring is almost here. The pieces in the box are also gemstones.

Of course I didn’t think of it until after I returned home and uploaded these photos, but the Stretchy Cord and the food charms would have made a cute little casual summer bracelet. I loved the food charms, which had everything from vegetables, fruit, cheese, sushi, cupcakes and donuts. For the non-foodie, among the large inventory of just too cute charms were owls, shoes, medallions and butterflies. There is also a selection of Hilltribe Silver as well as an interesting selection of gold colored beads and other accoutrement’s.

Be sure to click on any photo to see more of these gorgeous gems!

The deep, vibrant, rich colors here just made me want to stare at these pieces, and would certainly make gorgeous necklaces.

You can find all of the above, and much, much more in this lovely shop in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area.

Jessica’s Jewelry in Ravenswood

If you’re looking for a last minute gift of fine jewelry that won’t break that bank try Jessica’s Jewelry in Ravenswood. Situated near Damen on Lawrence, I first discovered the store when people from Sears sent me there for a ring resizing. I noticed they often had nice pieces, none of them vermeil like one might find in many department stores, but in 14K Gold as well as some pieces in 927 Silver. One of the things I like about the store is that it is a family owned business and the owners tend to have a good customer relationship with their regulars.

Jessica’s also buys gold and silver jewelry. I had a bunch of those old chains that came with necklaces that were gifts, and things that my mom had that were not anything I’d want to wear. Since they still had value, I brought them in, and put the money toward layaway so that it would be around by December. It is a gorgeous French Amethyst ring that that Mr. Novio purchased for me for Christmas.
If you like citrine, this unusual setting is beautiful when you see it in person.

These pearl earrings with gold loops lend visual interest to what could be a plain setting.
If you like dangles, these were both pretty and cute. I’m just glad I don’t have pierced ears or I’d be tempted!
I’m normally not a fan of hard bangle bracelets that are this big, but I had to admit that this is a striking piece. Imagine this and the necklaces with a high neck, black long sleeved sweater!

They also have an wide variety of pendants, in 14K Gold, or with gems, and a nice selection of rings, both with gems and in gold.

I’ve Been Sniped!

I was cleaning out some of my mom’s fun, sparkly things, and that included an interesting assortment of old, old hatpins. If you like the pins but don’t like to wear hats, you can get an end plug, and just wear these as stickpins. They work well on coats as well as sweaters and sweater jackets and sweater vests.

What struck me when I looked at the pins was the lovely detail on each piece. many of them are like little pieces of art. I went on E-Bay to see what else they usually have. I love green. Mr. Novio bought me a lovely emerald bracelet, which is that gorgeous Kelly green that I love. But I digress. I found an interesting vintage hat pin in green with rhinestones around it. The design was stunning even if the piece was not “real jewelry” but costume. Amazingly it went for nearly $70 including shipping.

Last night, with Mr. Novio working, I was checking one of my bids for a lovely piece that only had two bids on it, including mine. The pin was a platinum heart set with tiny diamonds, and on a 14K gold pin. There were several bidders. I was watching this carefully since I did want it, and the price was inexpensive, substantially less than the green pin and certainly worth far more. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that the winning last minute sneak bid was 50 cents over mine. I had been sniped!

Sniping is a term used for people who put in last minute bids to win a bid. Snipers often will never participate in the normal bidding process, so others interested in the item will not know there is another bidder out there until they have lost the bid. There are sniping software programs that one can use to do this, if a person doesn’t want to be tied to their computer but wants to make sure they get their item.

Currently there are a bunch of us bidding on the above pins. I have no idea whether I’ll win the bid, because there seems to be a big interest in this particular lot. Obviously someone will win it. If it goes too high for my budget, I’m out of the running. I have other real life bills to pay and the hat and stick pins are just for fun.
.
Part of the fun with E-Bay bidding is the bidding process, when it is open and transparent. Sniping is not. So if you’re in it only for the hunt, versus the ride, sniping is for you. Personally I like the bidding process, both as a buyer and as a seller. In any event, even if I don’t win the bid on these, I hope to win the bids on a few interesting pieces out there, more tiny pieces of art, and all very retro.
